Chinese V Students Win Gold Awards in the 2023 National Chinese Essay Contest

St. Stephen’s students Zachary Tan, Meghan Chia, and Julia Havermann enrolled in instructor Hai Olefsky’s Chinese V class recently won the "Gold Award" certificates in the 2022 National Chinese Essay Contest sponsored by the Chinese Language Association of Secondary Schools. 
 
National Chinese Essay Contest is sponsored by the Chinese Language Association of Secondary Schools (CLASS) The contest is a once-a-year national competition and is in its 19th year of operation.

Earning a Gold Award is no small feat! The panel of judges who evaluate the essays is composed of board members from the Chinese Language Association of Secondary School.

Rules for the contest include:
  • Students must be currently enrolled in a Mandarin Chinese program at a school  accredited by regional accreditation institution the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), or a school that’s a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
  • The contestant’s teacher must be a current member of the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS).
  • Essays must be written on provided paper and handwritten legibly, using a minimum of 500 characters.
  • All entries must be the student’s original independent work.
