How to Apply

We're thrilled you're considering St. Stephen's school and look forward to getting to know your family during the admission process.

To submit an application for the 2021-2022 academic year, please create an account with our SchoolAdmin admission application portal. You'll use the portal to submit forms, upload report cards and request recommendations. It also provides a checklist so you can see the status of your application.

You'll need only one SchoolAdmin account to manage the admission process for multiple family members.

Steps to Apply

  • Application

    Biographical Information - Must be completed before starting any other forms. This form starts the application process and generates the student file. Credit card payment of the application fee must accompany online submission. The application fee is $100 for U.S. residents and $125 for applicants (or their parents) who reside outside the U.S. An application fee waiver may be requested by calling the Office of Admission at 512-327-1213 ext. 210 or by sending an email to Once the initial application form is submitted, it may take up to 2 business days for the electronic file to be created which allows access to the additional required forms and uploads.
  • Student Questionnaire

    To be completed by student applicant. This form allows the applicant to share with the admission committee their personality and passions. It is to be completed by the student without assistance (other than helping navigate the website) from teachers or parents.
  • Student Essay

    To be completed by student applicant. Applicants write a 200-600 word essay, responding to one of three prompts. It is to be completed by the student without assistance (other than helping navigate the website) from teachers or parents.
  • Recommendations

    Current Math Teacher, Current English Teacher, Personal - You will be asked to provide email addresses for your recommenders. They will receive a link to the recommendation that allows them to complete and submit their form online. Once the recommendation is submitted you will receive an email confirmation.
  • Parent Statement

    The Admission Committee is eager to learn about your child. Please be candid with your responses. We also ask that you upload a recent photo of your student. While not required, it is extremely helpful during the admission process.
  • Report Cards

    Scan and upload copies of the applicant’s final report card from last school year and the most recent report card or progress report for the current school year. Official transcripts from the school are not required - copies of report cards sent to the families may be submitted.
  • Arrange for Testing

    All applicants are required to submit results from either the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) or Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE). Testing before or on January 25 will ensure that the scores are accepted for the January 25 priority application deadline. The testing company will release the scores to St. Stephen’s and will then be marked as received on the application checklist.
    Both the SSAT and ISEE are offering options to test on a home computer and some school sites are still available for in person testing. At this time, St. Stephen's is not offering on campus testing for the SSAT. SSAT has a helpful web page with instructions on home based testing. SSAT also offers computer based practice tests.
    When registering for the SSAT ( be sure to type St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, Austin as a score recipient. The ISEE ( code number for St. Stephen’s is 440315.
    International students - In addition to SSAT scores, students may submit SLEP or TOEFL scores to demonstrate English proficiency. SLEP and TOEFL scores will not be accepted in lieu of SSAT scores. The TOEFL code is B078. International students should refer to the International Admission link on the Admission page of the school website.
  • Campus Visits

    Class Visits - Applicants may visit classes on designated days to meet students and teachers. Class visit details and registration are available through the admission website or by calling the Office of Admission. Class visits may be virtual as the school will not be open to visitors until a later date. Class visits are optional.
    An in-person or virtual Open House will be held on December 6, 2020. The program allows families to experience our inspiring classroom environment, meet our faculty and students, and learn about the admission process. The program begins at 1:30 p.m. and is appropriate for parents and their students in grade 4 and above.
  • Interview

    Schedule an interview with an Admission Officer at 512-327-1213 ext. 210 or The interview is required and must be completed by the January 25th deadline for priority admission. Interviews will be conducted by Zoom until it is safe to resume in person appointments. The interview is for both parent(s) and applicant and takes about an hour (30 minutes each). Due to limited availability in January, we encourage families to complete their interview and class visit before December 15.
  • Online Application Checklist

    Within 2 days of submitting the New Student Application, families can follow the progress of their file through an online checklist. All documents submitted electronically will be posted to the application file and the status can be reviewed through the SchoolAdmin account. Paper forms (ie: report cards, photos) received by mail may take up to two weeks to be reflected on the Online Application Checklist.

Common Application

In an effort to simplify the application process and eliminate unnecessary duplication of effort, boarding applicants may elect to apply using the Standard Application Online - SAO through the SSAT.

Important Dates

Applications for admission are accepted year round. The priority admission deadline is January 25. Students who complete files by January 25 get priority consideration for available spaces and we'll notify you of the decision on March 10th.

After January 25, St. Stephen’s considers applications on a rolling basis. When all spaces are filled, qualified candidates are placed on the waiting list if openings occur.
