Students Shadow Pathology Specialist
Pathophysiology independent study students, seniors Lavanya Sankaran and Audrey Czuchna, recently traveled with science instructor Kathy McCain to Victoria, Texas, to shadow alumna and current parent, Dr. Leilani (Gietz) Valdes ’91, a pathology specialist at Citizens Medical Center.
They began their visit by participating in and reporting to the tumor board, a group of health care providers with different specialties that meets regularly to discuss cancer cases and share knowledge. Dr. Valdes then showed the students how frozen cell sections are made. They also were treated to a tour of the blood lab, microbiology lab and chemistry lab before having the opportunity to watch Dr. Valdes diagnose cases based on prepared cell slides. The day ended with the students watching a pathologist physician assistant dissect and prepare tissue for diagnosis by Dr. Valdes.
