About Lessons and Carols

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first introduced on Christmas Eve in 1918 at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. Traditionally the candlelit service begins with the lone voice of a shepherd singing of the humble faith of Mary and concludes with a joyful carol after the reading announcing the birth of Jesus. For decades at St. Stephen’s, the service has included the retelling of this arc of salvation history, and anthems and carols led by members of the St. Stephen’s choirs. The service is also an opportunity to pause in the midst of a hectic holiday season and pray for God’s peace to bless our community and the world.

May you and your family be blessed with an abundance of happiness and peace this holiday season and in the new year.

Haitian Marketplace

After the Lessons and Carols service visit the holiday Haitian Marketplace located in Scanlan Gallery in the Helm Fine Arts Center. There you’ll find a bazaar of artisan-made goods from Haiti and other fair-trade vendors to celebrate our prized 20-year school partnership with St. Etienne Episcopal School. Included are metalwork from Haiti, lovely bags and jewelry from two Austin-based designers, Raven & Lily and Lilja Designs, and so much more. The market is perfect for those who wish to consider ethical gift-giving this holiday.

All proceeds will help provide education and a daily meal for over 400 K-9 children at St. Etienne Episcopal School in remote Salmadere, Haiti. Learn More
