The SSES Health Team has organized a special presentation for our students today.

We will not have 3rd Period to accommodate the Wellness Programs. The schedule will otherwise remain the same.

NUTRITION AND DISORDERED EATING: MAKING SENSE OF EATING WELL
Nutrition is a popular buzzword and all the latest craze! Paleo? Keto? Vegan? There is so much information out there. How do we make sense of it all? This session will review current nutrition fads, what you need to know about the food you eat, and when what you are doing becomes unhealthy. This session also will involve discussions of how you know when things have gone too far, how diets can lead to excessive restrictions and the slippery slope to eating disorders. The presentation is provided by Adee Levinstein of Eating Recovery Center, a local eating disorder treatment center.

Adee Levinstein, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, works as a registered dietitian at Eating Recovery Center in Austin. Levinstein completed her medical dietetics studies and internship at the University of Missouri’s Coordinated Program in Dietetics. She went on to complete a sports nutrition fellowship and graduate assistantship while obtaining her master’s degree in exercise science at Auburn University and becoming a certified specialist in sports dietetics. It was during her time at Auburn that she developed her passion for improving and healing people’s relationships with food and movement. https://www.eatingrecoverycenter.com/recovery-centers/austin?utm_source=local-listing &utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=website-link

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS: EXPECT RESPECT (OPEN TO 9TH AND 10TH ONLY)
Courting, dating, hooking up or hanging out? Thinking about romantic relationships? Wanting to take it to the next step beyond flirting? Join us for an interactive workshop that will help you to avoid some of the problems associated with dating and work toward having healthy relationships.

Randy Randolph, Expect Respect prevention manager, has worked at SAFE since 2001, creating and conducting educational presentations and workshops for youth and youth-serving adults. Her expertise includes positive youth development, violence prevention education, and supporting teens in using their creative ideas and voice to change harmful social norms. Randolph’s youth leaders, who have become peer-helpers, activists and educators, have been featured on the local news and received national attention and funding for the quality of their campaigns. Randolph also provides training and technical assistance to various youth-serving programs to help them address unhealthy campus behaviors and prevent youth violence. https://www.safeaustin.org/our-services/prevention-and-education/expect-respect/

CONSENT: LOVE AND LAW IN THE #METOO ERA (OPEN TO 11TH AND 12TH ONLY)
This discussion will explore the legal, ethical and practical aspects of consent facilitated by a team of criminal attorneys. In the seminar, students will learn the law of consent and appreciate the complexities of these matters in a variety of situations, including: explicit digital written consent but in-person change of mind, alcohol and controlled substances, sexting and child pornography laws, and ages in the juvenile and criminal justice systems. This session will include review of real cases (and de-identified police reports) from teenagers, hypothetical scenarios, role play as judge / jury / prosecutor / defense attorney, and role play as legislators drafting a law broad enough to capture lack of consent but narrow enough to avoid wrongful conviction.

David Gonzalez and Corinne Sumpter have spoken to teenagers about their legal risks and rights for more than 20 years. They began as second-year Stanford Law School students, teaching incarcerated teenage gang members at the California Youth Authority. Sumpter continued in juvenile law while still at Stanford, representing teenagers at the San Francisco Public Defender's Office as an intern; Gonzalez worked in the Stanford Criminal Prosecution Clinic. After law school, Gonzalez moved back to Texas and opened a private practice, while Sumpter earned her L.L.M. as a teaching fellow in the Juvenile Justice Clinic at Georgetown Law. In addition to his caseload, Gonzalez teaches at UT Law School as an adjunct professor in the Trial Advocacy Program, and he works as legislative counsel for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Assn. He has served as a special prosecutor for cases involving abuse of power by elected officials and homicide by police officers. He currently serves on the board of disciplinary appeals for the Texas Supreme Court. https://sumptergonzalez.com/

YOGA: BOWSPRING METHOD
Try this revolutionary new form of alignment called Bowspring. The Bowspring method focuses on remolding the alignment of the fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds the whole body and all of the muscles and bones. When the fascia is balanced in its alignment, you become lighter and more powerfully springy in all of your functional movements. The Bowspring method teaches full-range breathing for stress management and to reboot physiological cycles toward strengthened immunity and greater health. The method cultivates awareness and increased sensitivity through a mindful intention to take care of ourselves by identifying our default patterns, both
physical and emotional. It is a mind/heart/body practice. Practicing the Bowspring method as a lifestyle develops mindfulness, compassion and personal accountability, which in turn cultivates self-empowerment.

Paige Dunlap has more than 20 years experience teaching yoga in Austin. https://www.globalbowspring.com/

SUBSTANCE USE: SIFTING THROUGH FACT VS. FICTION
