Lone Star / Spartan Field Hockey Camp

Join Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards and the Spartan coaching staff for a week full of hockey at St. Stephen’s!

Beginners or experienced campers are welcome. Campers will be placed in age and skill appropriate groups. We’ll introduce and hone individual stick skills, practice passing and receiving, and learn defensive strategy and technique through small games, eventually working up to larger half or whole field play!

Camp includes a snack break, lunch, and pool time on Monday - Thursday and Friday will end with games and a pizza lunch!

 

Campers should bring a hockey stick, shin guards, a mouthguard, and a water bottle for camp. Campers should wear turf shoes or sneakers to camp. No cleats are allowed on the hockey turf! 

Chelsea Richards grew up in the Dallas area and did not start playing hockey until she was in 7th grade at The Hockaday School. While she played three sports through her senior year of high school (field hockey, soccer, and softball), Richards navigated the college field hockey recruiting process and decided to continue her athletic and academic careers at The University of Iowa. As a Hawkeye, Richards and her team won two Big Ten Championships, earned a couple of NCAA Tournament appearances, and even made it all the way to the Final Four. After graduating with a BA in Health Science and a BFA in Graphic Design, Richards worked as a designer for five years before making the leap to full-time coaching. Since moving to Austin in 2016, Richards has led the Spartan Field Hockey Program at St. Stephen’s, coaching the team to a third place finish in the conference in Fall 2022. She has helped a number of athletes pursue their own collegiate hockey careers, with Spartans landing at Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth, and Middlebury. Currently, Richards serves as an Associate Athletic Director, Upper School Advisor, and Admissions Officer at St. Stephen’s. Richards still enjoys playing field hockey, soccer, floorball, and running in her spare time. She and her husband, Mitch, live in south Austin with their 3-year-old son, Dayton, and dog, Nagbe.
