Spartans Awarded First and Second Places in Steinway Competition
On Saturday, Feb. 27, Spartan siblings Matthew Kim, 12th grade, and Natalie Kim, 11th grade, performed in the Steinway Piano Concerto Competition, an annual Austin District Music Teachers Association event.
For the competition, Matthew played "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin, and Natalie played the second movement from "Piano Concerto No. 2" by Rachmaninoff. Both pieces were performed live for the judges. Natalie offered a truly inspiring rendition and was awarded first place; Matthew's efforts were awarded with the second-place prize.
"The Steinway Piano Concerto Competition is a highly competitive event," said Elizabeth Hansing Moon, fine arts department chair. "Winning a concerto competition signifies years of focused work."
The two award winners will play their piano concertos with the St. Stephen's Orchestra during the annual spring concert. Matthew plays violin and is concertmaster for the orchestra; Natalie is principal cellist.
