2019-2020 DEI Audit
In the 2019-20 school year, St. Stephen’s will embark upon a comprehensive audit of our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practices. This important project will be led by our Diversity Audit Steering Committee and conducted in collaboration with The Glasgow Group, a firm that provides strategic consulting and coaching services to help schools improve their cultural competency and enhance their DEI practices.
The audit will kick off with a survey for all members of our community in November and December, followed by focus groups with various constituencies early in 2020. The audit will culminate in a final report delivered to me and the Diversity Audit Steering Committee before the end of the 2019-20 school year. This report will include a thorough assessment of our current DEI practices and a list of recommendations for improvement. The DEI team will use these recommendations to develop a strategic plan that spells out the school’s top priorities and sets a timeline for implementation of key initiatives.
- First, we want to measure how well we are upholding and advancing our founders’ bold, progressive vision for a diverse and equitable school community. Put another way, are we living the core values and enduring principles that have distinguished our school from its very founding?
- Second, the audit will serve as a necessary first step in realizing our dream of establishing the Bishop Hines Center for Social Justice, one of the most important strategic initiatives laid out in SPARK 2023.
- Finally, it will allow the board of trustees and head of school to hold St. Stephen’s accountable for living out our mission by periodically monitoring and assessing school culture, in accordance with the National Association of Independent Schools’ “Principles of Good Practice for Equity and Justice.”
