Making Austin No Place for Hate

In December, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of Austin hosted the 8th Annual No Place for Hate Youth Summit. St. Stephen's students and staff were among the more than 700 students and educators who participated in this highly spirited one-day workshop, led by Jillian Bontke, M.Ed., LPC, education project director for ADL.

The annual summit seeks to empower students and faculty to build campuses of respect. Student participants learned the dangers of bigotry, how to recognize bullying on their campuses, tools to confront the behavior, and how to be an ally. Close to 100 volunteers joined the ADL to provide educators and students with the tools needed to stand up against hate, and the resources to ensure that anti-bias and diversity education are a part of their school’s curriculum.

St. Stephen's took a delegation of 8th-grade students and two adults to engage in hard conversations centered around social justice and bullying. Attendees included Miles Ray, Victoria Alcocer, Leila Tilin, Jake Chappelear, Valeria Montanez, Miles Adams, Ali Sait, Beck Arnow, and Sierra Coffey.

What our students had to say about the No Place For Hate Youth Summit:

“My kids talked about how eye-opening their sessions were. They didn’t realize what so many kids go through in their day to day school and community life.”

“I feel that I have gained many skills that I can use in bullying situations, as well as having an improved knowledge of what bullying is.”

The students took the activities learned from the summit and used them to help lead activities for other St. Stephen’s Middle School students on MLK Day.
