Sixth Graders Study Wind Energy

Earlier this week, St. Stephen's sixth graders learned about wind energy from Arnold Wilmink, vice president of engineering at the German wind energy firm EON. Wilmink spoke to 68 rapt students about the design elements of wind turbines and wind farms. The father of sixth grader Mirthe and ninth grader Max, Wilmink taught students about the transfer of molecules by having them blow on paper, simulating the action of wind turbine blades. He also explained the various components of turbines and showed students how the parts work together to produce clean, renewable energy.

This exciting lesson dovetails perfectly with Middle School science teacher Kindy Verderber's unit on design for the Invention Convention project and the wind motor project in connection with William Kamkwamba's "
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind." Many thanks to Wilmink for taking time to visit our Middle School!
