Spartan Field Hockey Upsets Defending SPC Champs
St. Stephen's Varsity Field Hockey team defeated SPC defending champions St. John's in a hard-fought game on Friday, September 22 on St. Stephen’s Phipps Field. The Spartans came out aggressive in the first half, scoring just two minutes into the game on an attacking penalty corner. The Mavericks were able to equalize before the half, with a halftime score of 1-1. The Spartans earned their second goal from the field of play, but the Mavericks answered again to make the score 2-2. In the final seconds of play, St. Stephen's earned an attaching penalty corner, executed the play perfectly, and came away with an upset victory. Junior Siofra Murdoch scored all three goals with assists coming from junior Callie Cho and junior Caroline Ratliff. Goalkeeper Margaret Savage, also a junior, earned three saves, and the Spartan defense held St. John's to just five total shots. St. Stephen's seeks to continue their undefeated season on Friday, September 29 at Trinity Valley in Fort Worth.
