Every year Dean Mohlman's Biology I students begin their study of mammalian anatomy by performing surgery on a fetal pig. Students are asked to investigate how a coronary bypass operation, liver transplant, kidney transplant, and other surgeries are performed on a human—and then use this knowledge to perform the operation on their classroom patient. After this inquiry activity, students investigate the various systems of the human body using the pig as a model for understanding the location of the various structures and their functions.
Special thanks go to Seton Hospital and the Robertson family for donating surgical equipment for students use.
