Moore Advances to Chinese Language Nationals

St. Stephen’s senior Kisara Moore has advanced to the final round of the 2017 U.S. National Chinese Speech Contest, which will take place on April 22 in Boston. Moore is one of only nine national finalists in the non-native language speaker category. For the final round of competition, Moore will deliver a three-minute memorized Chinese speech entitled “Chinese and me.” She also will perform a traditional dance from the popular Chinese song “Fragrance of the Night.”

Last December Moore’s Chinese language essay “The Most Influential Person” was selected for publication in JUHE, the only annual magazine dedicated to the publication of fine Chinese essays in North America. She also won the Gold Award for the same essay at the 13th National CLASS Essay Contest, which is sponsored by the Chinese Language Association of Secondary Schools.

Moore, co-president of St. Stephen’s Chinese Language and Culture Club, is enrolled in advanced independent study Level VII Chinese. Her Chinese language teacher is Hai Zheng Olefsky, associate director of the International Program and chair of Chinese Studies at St. Stephen’s.
