ISAS Fine Arts Festival Recap

Last week St. Stephen's students represented the school at the Independent Schools Association of the Soutwest (ISAS) Arts Festival. This year's 50th anniversary of the festival was held April 6-8 at Casady School in Oklahoma City, where the festival was first held in 1967. The ISAS Arts Festival has grown into a premiere annual regional arts festival among independent schools.

"St. Stephen's sent 175 students and faculty members to the 2017 festival," said Elizabeth Hansing Moon, fine arts department chair. "St. Stephen's students represented their school, their programs and themselves through performances in theatre, orchestra, chamber music, jazz band, guitar ensemble, choir, Madrigals, Thunder Drums, piano, instrumental and vocal solos. Visual artists exhibited ceramics, 2D art and 3D sculpture, digital media, and photography. The festival is truly a celebration of the arts, and each performance and exhibition is critiqued by a professional artist. This atmosphere of sharing and learning is reinforced through an extensive menu of workshops and masterclasses as well as the more formal critiques."

More than 40 schools and 3,300 students from six states participated in the three-day celebration of performing and visual arts. "They left the festival with professional feedback, potential college connections, new friends, and a wealth of ideas for new projects," Moon said. "This year's festival, complete with birthday cake and fireworks, sent us into the next half-century in a spectacular way. Next April we will gather at Hockaday, and St. Stephen's will pick up the baton a year from now, as we prepare to host this amazing event in 2019!"

Many thanks to photography instructor Chris Caselli '82 for the great pics!
