St. Stephen’s to Host Justin Crosby Sculptures this Fall

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School is pleased to host the artistic work of alumnus Justin Crosby ’00 in the Scanlan Gallery for six weeks this fall.

The exhibit, “Making: The Effort,” includes sculptures built by Crosby performing various actions on objects associated with an array of recreational activities, most notably basketball and rock climbing. These actions and resulting sculptures relate metaphorically to Crosby’s efforts to incorporate such activities into his daily life, as well as his search for fulfillment and wholeness.

An Austin native, Crosby earned a B.A. from Swarthmore College in 2004 and a post-baccalaureate certificate in fine arts from the Maryland Institute College of Arts in 2012. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) with an M.F.A. in art in May 2015.

“Making: The Effort” runs from August 24 to October 4, 2015, in the Scanlan Gallery in the Helm Fine Arts Center on the St. Stephen’s Episcopal School campus at 6500 St. Stephen’s Drive in Austin. An artist reception will be held on Sunday, August 30 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and includes a talk by the artist at 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Scanlan Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., by appointment and during events in the Helm Fine Arts Center. For more information, please contact Beatrice Baldwin at bbaldwin@sstx.org.
