Spartan Scoreboard, January 16-21

The Spartan Varsity teams had a weekend full of tough competition against SPC opponents at home. The Middle School teams competed with pride and enjoyed a successful week of competition on the courts and fields. Here is this week’s recap of Spartan Sports.

Girls Basketball: Girls Varsity Basketball competed against a talented Episcopal High School of Houston team on Friday night. Despite their fight, the Spartans couldn’t hold off the Knights powerful offense. On Saturday the team faced Awty International in an all out battle. The squad held on for the first half, but the Rams pulled ahead in the second half, winning by just 8 points in the last few minutes. The Spartans are back on the road this week against Kinkaid and St. John’s in Houston.

Boys Basketball: The Varsity Boys Basketball team played Episcopal High School of Houston on Friday evening. Although the Spartans pushed Episcopal in the first half, they struggled to contain the Knights in the second half. On Saturday the team bounced back, dominating Awty International to earn their first conference victory, 75-49. Rex Ramza (11th grade) had 8 points and really stepped up for the Spartan defense. Senior guard Andy Li (12th grade) shot the ball well and came off the bench ready to play. Head Coach LaMont King was pleased with the team’s play. “It was a great team effort,” he said. “We were able to bounce back after a tough loss to Episcopal. The team is looking for a good outing this weekend as we head back to Houston.”

Girls Soccer: Girls Varsity Soccer competed against Epsicopal High School of Houston on Friday night. The squad managed to hold the Knights scoreless in the first half, but ultimately the EHS had the upper hand and came out with a victory. The Spartans rebounded on Saturday morning, pulling out a convincing 2-0 win against Awty International. Espi Weatherspoon (11th grade) scored both goals for the Spartans, and Nora Felner earned a clean sheet in goal. The team will head to Houston to face Kinkaid and St. John’s for more SPC competition on Friday and Saturday.

Boys Soccer: The Varsity Boys Soccer team faced a very fast and agile Episcopal team on Friday evening. The Knights came out fast in the first part of the game. Their offense was too strong for the Spartan defensive unit to yield off. The Spartans ultimately fell to the Knights 0-4, putting up a good fight until the finish of the game. On Saturday, the team went up against Awty International. The Spartans tried to hold on against a formidable attack from the Rams, but their opponent was too strong, outscoring them 0-5. The team will travel again to face off against SPC foes Kinkaid and St. John's on Friday and Saturday, January 27 and 28. They look forward to fighting for their first conference win on the road.

Middle School: Middle School Spartans competed mightily this week. On Tuesday evening Red Soccer defeated St. Gabriel’s 7-2, and Gray Basketball defeated St. Francis 21-11. On Wednesday the 6th grade basketball teams went 2-0 over The Texas School of the Deaf, while 7/8th grade Purple Boys Basketball won 25-18 and Red Soccer defeated Trinity 12-1. To finish out their week, the Middle School Basketball teams swept St. Andrew’s on Thursday night!
