Spartan Scoreboard, January 2 - 6

Spartans have hit the ground running in the new year! Spartan Varsity teams are entering conference play, and JV teams are rounding out the winter seasons. Here is the recap of the week for Spartan winter sports. 

Swimming: The Spartan Swim team had their first meet of the year, and the squad competed admirably at the Texas School for the Deaf meet last weekend. Spartan Girls placed second on the girls’ side, and the Boys placed first, making St. Stephen’s the overall meet champion. The Girls 200 Medley Relay team earned a first place finish with Caroline Jones (11th grade), Suan Park (10th grade), Lucy Middleton (10th grade), and Kristin Svahn (12th grade), while the Boys 200 Medley Relay also secured the top spot on the podium with Logan Walker (12th grade), Levi Skaistis (9th grade), Watt Wilkinson (10th grade), and Tristan McCain (9th grade). Kristin Svahn won the Girls 200 yard Freestyle race, and Logan Walker placed first in the Boys 200 yard Freestyle, while Tijl Peeters (9th grade) placed second. In the Girls 100 yard Individual Medley race, Lucy Middleton and Clara Rogers (10th grade) placed first and second, respectively, while Levi Skaistis, Tijl Peeters and Deji Fafunwa (11th grade) placed first, second and third in the boys race. In the Girls 200 yard Individual Medley race, Suan Park and Kristin Svahn placed second and third, while Watt Wilkinson placed first in the boys race. Tristan McCain placed first overall in the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard freestyle. The Girls 200 yard Freestyle Relay placed first with swimmers Lucy Middleton, Suan Park, Kristin Svahn, and Caroline Jones while Logan Walker, Levi Skaistis, Watt Wilkinson and Tristan McCain won on the boys side. Logan Walker won the 100 yard Butterfly and Levi Skaistis placed third. Suo Park (9th grade) placed first in the Boys 50 yard Butterfly and Watt Wilkinson placed first in the 100 yard backstroke. In the 200 yard Individual Medley, Suan Park and Kristin Svahn placed second and third while Watt Wilinson and Max Lain (11th grade) placed first and second overall. The Spartan Swim team had a great start to the season with lots of athletes qualifying for the SPC Meet. 

Girls Basketball: Girls Varsity Basketball competed against Duchesne for their first SPC counter game of the season. The team played a physical game and earned a home court victory. The Spartans got off to a slow start with a few turnovers but were able to pull together in the second half and overpower their opponent with full court pressure. Ella Eggleson (12th grade) and Tristan Lovell (10th grade) boosted the team’s energy on defense, while Trinity Borer (12th grade) and Emilia Fink (9th grade) worked together to direct the offensive play. Player of the game, Evie Kaydan (9th grade), helped lift the team to victory with her physical play at the post, as well as tactical offensive passes and rebounds. The final score of the game was 33-27. The Spartans will travel to Houston this weekend to face Houston Christian and the John Cooper School to continue the SPC counter games. 

Boys Basketball: On Wednesday evening, the Spartan Boys Basketball team played against a strong Gateway Prep squad. The team played well and fought hard until the end to earn a W on the night with a final score of 53-43. On Friday evening, the team traveled cross-town to Regents to play a talented team on the road. Although they didn’t pull out the win, the Spartans battled. Jack Mabley (12th grade) led in scoring and demonstrated true leadership throughout the game. The Spartans will travel to Houston this weekend to face Houston Christian and the John Cooper School to start their SPC counter games.

Girls Soccer: On Friday evening, the Girls Varsity Soccer team took the pitch against an undefeated Duchesne squad. The Spartans surprised their opponents with an early goal in the first half, scored by Kayla Fink (11th grade). The Chargers came back to score two goals in the second half and ultimately eked out the victory over the Spartans. The team will head to Houston to face Houston Christian and the John Cooper School this weekend. 

Middle School: The Middle School Spartans were back at it with competition from the Swim team on Saturday at the Texas School of the Deaf Meet. St. Stephen’s placed fourth overall with a strong showing from the boys and girls relay teams. The Girls 200 yard Medley Relay placed second with swimmers Landis Middleton (7th grade), Elena Senoff (6th grade), Campbell Walker (7th grade) and Finley Wilson (6th grade) and also placed second in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay. Robert Roth (6th grade) won the 200 yard Freestyle while Campbell Walker won the 100 yard Individual Medley. Campbell Walker and Landis Middleton placed first and second in the 50 yard Freestyle while Ben Staubley (6th grade)  placed second on the boys side. Campbell Walker won the Girls 100 yard Butterfly race and Robert Roth won the boys race. Landis Middleton placed first in the 50 yard Backstroke, Elena Sendoff placed fourth in the 50 yard Breaststroke, and Ben Staubley placed second in the same race on the boys side. Middle School is back in action this week with lots of basketball and soccer competitions throughout the week.
