Spartan Scoreboard, Sept. 12–16

This week’s Spartan Scoreboard features wins from every Varsity program. Girls’ Volleyball, Field Hockey, Football and Boys’ Volleyball all had a victory from the week in conference play. The Middle School hosted more than 300 runners at their Cross Country meet and had many victories throughout the week. Here is the weekly recap of Spartan Athletics.

Boys’ Volleyball: The Boys’ Volleyball team matched up with St. John’s and Kinkaid on their home court on Friday, Sept. 16, and Saturday, Sept. 17. On Friday night, the Spartans got off to a slow start against the Mavs, losing the first two sets. They bounced back with energy and enthusiasm, taking the next two sets, then winning the game to a tie-break set. The Spartans could not finish the reverse sweep of St. John’s, but it was a hard-fought match and a stellar performance for the team. Tenth grader Charlie Dugan led the team in kills, while 10th grader Trey Phillips had 16 digs, and 10th grader Zach Prager led with two blocks on the night. On Saturday morning, the Spartans met the Kinkaid Falcons in another thrilling match that went to five sets. This time, the Spartans took home the win with 10th grader Charlie Dougan leading in kills in blocks and contributing 20 points. Eleventh grader Rex Ramza had two blocks, 10th grader Zach Prager contributed eight digs, and 11th-grade captain William Schmitdt had an impressive seven aces. The Boys’ Volleyball team is now 1-2 in SPC competition and looks to grab another victory against Meridian High School on Monday, Sept. 19, in Clayton Gym.

Football: The Spartan Football team sprang back this week and defeated the Austin Royals, 44–14, on Friday, Sept. 16. The team was ready to compete and had improved in all facets of the game. Congratulations to 12th grader Jack Mabely (overall), 12th grader Dennis Wilkinson (offensive), 12th grader Anthony Watson (defensive) and Christopher Tapia (special teams) for being named the St. Stephen’s Football Players of the Game. The team will face Feast Home School at home on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. and hopes to carry their momentum into conference play.

Field Hockey: The Spartan Field Hockey team had their first game on the new Phipps Field turf on Friday, Sept. 16. The Spartans faced SPC competitor Duchesne of the Sacred Heart. The team came out steaming, defeating the Chargers, 10-0. Goals were scored by Eliza Cho (3), Meg Canfield (2), Darby Osborne (2), Kayla FInk, Maya Patel and Emilia Fink. Hannah Simmonds and the defensive unit earned the shutout. Head Coach Chelsea Richards was proud of her team and very excited about the new turf field on the St. Stephen’s campus. “It has been a journey, getting this hockey turf at St. Stephen’s, and seeing all the pieces come together at our game on Friday was incredible,” she said. “Thanks to our administrative team, donors, hockey supporters and Spartan Hockey alumni who made this dream a reality for our program. The team is excited to train and play at a faster pace and work toward competing with the best in our conference.” The Spartans are back at it in Dallas this weekend against Casady and Episcopal School of Dallas on Sept. 23 and 24. 

Girls’ Volleyball: The Girls’ Volleyball team faced the Duchesne Chargers this week on Friday, Sept. 16, on their home court. The Spartans had a slow start, dropping the first set to the Chargers. The team bounced back quickly and defeated Duchesne handedly in the next three sets. This win puts the Spartans at 2-1 in SPC conference play. Eleventh-grade captain Kayla Patel led the team in kills and aces with a new career high of 32 kills, while 10th grader Cameron Carper led the team in digs. Tenth grader Leigh Wittliff added four aces on the stat sheet, and 11th grader Harriet Crofut added three aces. “The team fought hard,” Head Coach Juliann Johnson said about the match. “We came out a little slow, but turned it around in the last two sets to secure the win. I am proud of our fight and team’s effort against a strong Duchesne team. This week we have no games, so we will take advantage of that and work on technique and weight training.” The Spartans head to Hyde Park on Sept. 27 for their next non-conference match. 

Middle School: The Middle School Spartans had a packed week of games. On Monday, Sept. 12, the Field Hockey team defeated cross-town rivals St. Andrew’s, 6-0. Eight grader MJ Maebius scored four goals, and 7th grader Story Roger’s scored two. Eighth-grade goalie Jadyn Houston was clutch with the shutout. On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Purple Flag team defeated St. Francis, 27-14, and the Red Flag team claimed a win over Paragon, 27-6. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the Middle School teams had an awesome day of victories. The Football team defeated TSD, 39-20, after being tied 13-13 at the half. The 7th- and 8th-grade Spartan Girls’ Volleyball team defeated Paragon 2-0, while the 7th- and 8th-grade Red team beat Waldorf in the tie breaker set, 15-13. The 6th-grade Red Girls’ team had a victory over Paragon, while the field hockey team tied 1-1 with St. Andrew’s. Seventh grader Clary McDowell scored the goal. On Thursday, Sept. 15, Boys’ Volleyball defeated NYOS, 2-1. Lastly, on Saturday, Sept. 17, St. Stephen’s hosted a Cross Country meet with more than 300 runners. The 7th- and 8th-grade Boys’ team placed second, and the 7th- and 8th-grade Girls won the entire meet. Eight grader Josh Goldenberg finished second in a photo finish. Eighth grader Lucia Sterling also placed second. Notable finishes were from 7th grader Sophia Holland (4th), 7th grader Hana Milosavljevic (5th), 8th grader Alexa Natinksky (9th), 8th grader Sophia Yu (10th) and 6th grader Robert Roth (5th).
