Spartan Spotlights: Alan Guyton, 9th Grade, and Alexx Weatherspoon, 12th Grade

Alan Guyton, a 9th-grade Spartan, has been a spark for the Varsity Boys’ Basketball team this winter, especially in the team’s recent victories. Guyton may be one of the younger members of the team, but he has shown strong leadership on and off the court this season.

Coach La-Mont King has watched Guyton’s skills develop since he enrolled at St. Stephen’s in the 6th grade. “Alan has a great game IQ,” King said.”He understands ball movement, anticipates well and executes consistently.”

If you caught any of the Varsity Boys’ basketball games in the last week, you would have noticed Guyton’s contributions right away. “As a freshman, Alan has come along very nicely on the varsity team,” King continued. “He is a great leader and hard worker.”

Athletic Director Jon McCain praised Guyton’s recent performances as well, noting that he plays like a much older student. “He’s confident and puts in a strong effort on every play and at both ends of the court,” McCain noted.

Alexx Weatherspoon, a 12th grader and captain of the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team this season, has remained a steadfast leader despite the challenges that this winter has presented. Weatherspoon’s consistent energy and competitive spirit during both practices and games have certainly buoyed the team.

Head Coach Andy Aceves had many positive things to say about Weatherspoon’s performance and leadership this season. “Alexx was a driving force behind our 4-0 start to the season,” Aceves remarked. “She has been a prolific scorer, a dynamic playmaker and an exceptional leader. In Friday’s 3-2 win over John Cooper, she scored one goal and set up a late game winner with a brilliant effort in the penalty area.”

Weatherspoon’s field hockey coach, Chelsea Richards, was not surprised at all by Alexx’s dominance this winter. “Alexx brings fire to everything she does,” Richards noted. “She competes hard — in practices and competitions — and positively affects those around her.”

Each week, the athletic department and coaching staff feature Spartan athletes who stand out among their peers. Check back next week to see which student-athletes will be featured in our Sports Spotlight!
