Theatre Focus Workshop with Casting Agent

In mid-May 11 St. Stephen’s Theatre Focus students participated in a film auditioning workshop with casting agent Vicky Boone and members of her creative team. The entire workshop took place via Zoom and gave students their first real-life experience going through a professional casting call with one of the leading agents in Texas.

Boone has cast films for such well-known directors as Terrence Malick, Spike Jonze and Richard Linklater. She also cast commercials for many local, national and international production companies. Currently, she is casting for the Amazon series “Panic,” a high school drama.

The Theatre Focus workshop kicked off with Boone providing a 30-minute information session about the film casting process. Following that session, students had the opportunity to audition for Boone, using "sides" or scenes from films she has previously cast.

“The workshop provided a fantastic opportunity for those students who are interested in pursuing a film career to meet with Vicky and have her see them perform,” explained Mike Dolan, associate director of the Theatre Focus program. “She and her team worked with each student individually by giving them redirection and having them run their scene three or four times.”

“I found it really fun!” said 9th grader Maya Murtuza-Lanier. “I was nervous, but it was really interesting to work with an actual casting director.”

Boone left the workshop impressed with the students’ skills and talents. “We had a great time and enjoyed meeting the St. Stephen's students,” she said. “They are all very talented, excellent listeners and were a pleasure to work with. It was fun to witness their growth during the workshop.”
