College Check-In: Abraham Studor ’16, Member of the Hendrix College Men’s Soccer Team

After graduating from St. Stephen’s in 2016, Abraham Studor matriculated to Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, where he played on the Division III men’s soccer team.

Briefly describe what it was like to transition to the life of a college athlete.
St. Stephen’s did a really good job of teaching me how to balance both school and athletics from the beginning of my high school career. While college was more difficult to say the least, the transition was much smoother than I thought it would be, and I seemed to be a step ahead of the rest of my class when it came to time management and organizational skills.

What has been the most rewarding part about competing collegiately? Do you have a favorite moment from your college career?
Being able to say that you’re part of something bigger than yourself for four years would be the thing I’m most proud of. My favorite moment would be stepping onto the field for the first time my freshman year. I got a sense of accomplishment that I didn’t think I would ever get.

What has been the most challenging or the most surprising part about competing collegiately?
The traveling for away games was the hardest on me. Going on bus trips every weekend for sometimes as long as four days were exhausting and hard to juggle with schoolwork. Fortunately, my older teammates were able to tutor me on the trips and help me when I was missing class time.

What’s one thing you learned at St. Stephen’s that brought you comfort, allowed you success, helped you adjust, or changed your perspective of college?
Coach Shane Maguire taught me from middle school and onwards that hard work pays off. No matter the skill level that you’re at, hard work will pay off in the long run if you’re willing to put in the effort and time to what you’re doing.

What advice would you give graduating seniors moving on to pursue their sport at the collegiate level? What advice would you give underclassmen considering competing beyond high school?
Have confidence in what you’re doing. You may not always succeed, but putting yourself out there and trying to do the right thing will go so far with your coaches and even with yourself. Pushing yourself to do the things you’re uncomfortable with in your sport will bring more opportunities and success that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Academically, did you feel prepared to take on college-level work?
I did feel prepared. St. Stephen’s did a very good job of prepping us for life after high school.

Have you declared a major? If so, what are you studying?
I’ll be graduating with a degree in business and economics.

Anything else you'd like to add? Cool summer plans? Awesome internships? Travelling abroad?
I studied in London last semester and I loved it. I highly encourage students who are going into college to consider their options abroad on their off season. when I graduate this spring I’ll be starting a job as a program manager at Briggo.
