Spartans Head to Winter SPC Championships

Spartan varsity athletes are prepped and ready for the capstone athletic event of the season this weekend, and there is no doubt that competition at the SPC Championships promises to be exciting!

Varsity Swimming travels to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to compete in the SPC Championships on Thursday, Feb. 13. After months of swimming outdoors in the heated pool on campus, Spartan swimmers are ready to compete at Lewisville ISD’s Westside Aquatic Center. Coaches Daniel Haverty and Paul Carrozza are taking a talent team to the meet and have high expectations for the 17 athletes representing St. Stephen’s. Watch for record-breaking results from 12th graders Coby Carrozza and Jake Chappelear, as well as 9th graders Sydney Rawie and Logan Walker. Warm-ups begin Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m., and the meet will commence at 10 a.m. sharp.

Girls Varsity Basketball secured SPC South Zone’s sixth seed for the tournament after defeating St. Andrew’s 45-25 last Friday and finishing conference play with a record of 2-and-5. Despite managing challenging injuries and illnesses on a small roster, this young squad battled last Friday at St. Andrew’s to earn a place at the tournament this weekend. During the tournament, look for 10th graders Peyton Burgess and Gracie Ramza to propel the team forward with their energy on the court, and keep an eye out for 11th grader Whitney Ball’s constant hustle up and down the hardwood. Head Coach Rich McIver and Assistant Coaches Chris Breckwoldt and Kelton Malone are thrilled the team earned a place at the tournament this year. They noted that the squad’s improvement throughout the season can be attributed to their consistent, daily efforts in practice. The team faces Casady at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at ESD.

Girls Varsity Soccer earned a convincing 2-1 victory over St. Andrew’s last Friday to secure their spot at the SPC Championships this weekend. Rounding out South Zone play with a 2-4-1 record, the squad will battle Trinity Valley on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at Hockaday. Led by seniors and four-year varsity members Kaysi Gutierrez, Katie Moss, Lizzy Jones and Kate Goodman, the Spartans will lean on solid leadership, remarkable speed and solid play experience, as well as some classy soccer in each game this weekend. Head Coach Andy Aceves said he is “very excited for our team to have this opportunity to string together what we've been working on all season and to do it against some of the top competition in the SPC.” Aceves added that the players have been competing at a high level and have shown tremendous resilience through this taxing and competitive final stretch of conference play. “Of course, I am also excited for many of the things we have come to expect as staples of the girls soccer program: pho dinners, team yoga, lots of laughter and some beautiful, selfless soccer,” Aceves concluded.

Boys Varsity Soccer punched their ticket to the SPC Championships, earning the sixth seed in the South Zone after their gritty 0-0 draw last Friday against St. Andrew’s. The squad finished with a 1-5-1 conference record and will face St. Mark’s in their first match of the tournament on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. Watch for quality play from senior captains Braeden Johnson, Michael Martinez and David Houston this weekend. The trio has been consistent in their effort and energy and tirelessly works to push their squad past competitors. Head Coach Wallis Goodman and Assistant Coach Malek Ben-Musa are eager to see their team compete at the top of their game this weekend. “Despite the loss of a number of early SPC games, the team has continued to improve, playing its best soccer at the end of the season,” Goodman noted.

Boys Varsity Basketball secured a first round bye in the tournament by earning the top seed in the South Zone at the completion of conference play this winter. The squad’s 5-and-2 conference record is undoubtedly commendable. Despite finishing on top in the South, the team expects tough competition this weekend. Of course, their end goal is to bring an SPC Championship back to The Hill. Head Coach La-Mont King and Assistant Coach Kevin Anderson said the boys are ready for action this weekend. “We’ve got momentum on our side,” King said. “For the first time this season, everyone is healthy and ready to compete.” The Spartans will face the winner of Oakridge/St. John’s on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Greenhill in Dallas.
