Athletics Challenge Comes to a Head

As the end of the winter athletics season draws near, friendly competition with cross-town rival St. Andrew’s Episcopal School is heating up! Our inaugural Spartans-Highlanders Heads’ Challenge culminates this Friday, Feb. 7, after five weeks of competitive play.

The Heads’ Challenge, as conceived by the two heads of school, Chris Gunnin of St. Stephen’s and Sean Murphy of St. Andrew’s, is a point-based competition held at all levels of Middle School and Upper School athletics and across three sports — swimming, basketball and soccer.

Currently, the Spartans have a slight edge over the Highlanders with only six competitions remaining before the final tally, including two Middle School games on Wednesday evening. Even more exciting, varsity games taking place at St. Andrew’s on Friday, Feb. 7, will have major implications. Three of the four varsity matches will determine advancement to the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) championships next weekend in Dallas, including girls soccer, girls basketball and boys soccer.

To secure the wins needed to bring home a victory in the inaugural Spartans-Highlanders Heads’ Challenge and to earn a place at the SPC championships, Feb, 13-15, we need you! Wear your red and purple Spartan gear, and come cheer on our teams to victory over the Highlanders this Friday evening at St. Andrew’s!
