St. Stephen’s is pleased to announce its regional Scholastic Art Award winners for 2020. Judges for the Austin-area competition received nearly 1,500 individual student submissions and 33 senior portfolios, all of which were adjudicated by a panel of creative professionals on Saturday, Jan. 11.
Our school was well represented in this year’s competition. Seven 8th grade students and 26 Upper School students submitted 58 works or portfolios for consideration.
Spartan artists received 19 Gold Key awards, 15 Silver Key awards and 24 Honorable Mentions for their artwork, which spanned a range of categories that included Film and Animation, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Fashion, Architecture, Sculpture, Digital Art, Mixed Media, Photography, Cartooning, and Ceramics and Glass.
The regional Scholastic Writing Awards will be announced by the end of January. Gold Key recipients for both art and writing will move on to the national competition, which will be held later this spring. National winners will be invited to attend the national Scholastic Art and Writing Awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City in June.
Special thanks go to our school’s outstanding fine arts teachers, who helped prepare students for this important competition: Elizabeth Zepeda, Jennie Gray ’93, Lisa Orr, Mike Dolan, Chris Caselli ’82 and Mengxi Wang.
Gold Key-winning works will be on display in the Scanlan Art Gallery in the Helm Fine Arts Center from Jan. 26 to Feb. 7.
