Boys Varsity Basketball Team Competes in California Tournament

While many students spent the holiday break relaxing with their families, the Boys Varsity Basketball team made the trek to sunny San Diego to compete in the Surf n’ Slam Basketball Tournament.

Head Coach La-Mont King traveled to the California tournament with 14 Spartans, who challenged West Coast teams in the Slam Division. The squad went 2-and-1 during their three-day stint, eventually earning a consolation championship. Of course, in their downtime, the team explored San Diego, visiting the San Diego Zoo, Mission Beach and Seaport Village.

The Spartans dropped their first game to Palos Verdes (Calif.), 55-59, but rallied in their second game, defeating Granite Bay (Calif.) by 10 points, 58-58. The consolation championship against Kelso (Wash.) was tight. With dramatic flair, senior Brian Bernard sunk a three-point buzzer-beater to secure the team win, 40-39.

With the trip behind them, the varsity squad looks forward to their first conference match on Friday, Jan. 10, at Episcopal High School in Houston.
