Athletes of the Week: Baeza and Schaffer

With the SPC Championships in the rear view mirror, our Spartans are moving on to winter sports. But before closing the book on the fall season, we want to honor Julian Baeza (12th grade) and Zoe Schaffer (10th grade) as our final fall Spartan Athletes of the Week.

Julian Baeza predictably dominated the SPC Championship cross country meet at the Woodlands on Saturday, Nov. 9. Baeza breezed past the competition and finished the meet with a time of 15:28.5, setting a personal record and earning first place out of more than 200 runners. “Julian had the talent and desire, and he did the work, leading up to the Championships,” said Coach Paul Carrozza, who watched it all play out. “He is now on the national radar for Division 1.”

Zoe Schaffer shined during the Spartans’ three field hockey games at the SPC Championships. Playing both midfield and forward, Schaffer’s tenacity on the field earned her two goals during the weekend. “Zoe was on fire against Episcopal School of Dallas on Saturday,” said Coach Chelsea Richards. “She took control of the game with excellent technical skills and elevated the team’s energy with gritty plays in our attacking third.” The team went 2-1 for the weekend and finished in fifth place.
