Athletes of the Week: Dewey and Dowd

Three cheers for 11th grader Henry Dewey and 10th grader Kendall Dowd for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors for their performances in weekend competitions.

Henry Dewey (#25) helped Boys Varsity Volleyball sail past St. John’s in three sets on Saturday. As a middle blocker for the Spartans, Dewey’s disciplined effort and supportive nature play a huge part in keeping the team focused on the task at hand. Over the weekend, when one game was tied 24-24, Dewey came up big in the middle. He crushed a set and allowed the Spartans to snag a 26-24 win over the Mavericks. With Dewey’s performance on Saturday, the team remains at third place in SPC’s South Zone. Come cheer on Dewey and the rest of the Spartans on Friday, Oct 25, in Clayton Gym as the squad hosts more than 15 teams for the action-packed tournament.

Goalkeeper Kendall Dowd (#98) rose to the occasion on Saturday as the team battled SPC foe St. John’s on Phipps Field. Dowd earned an impressive 16 saves in the match and was a commanding defensive presence in the backfield throughout the 60 minutes of play. Her ability to extend to more challenging players in the circle and quickly recover for second shots was impressive. While the Spartans were not able to finish any opportunities, Dowd kept the game close, allowing only two goals from a very talented Mavericks squad. Dowd and the rest of the team are back in action on Thursday evening, when they will take on Lone Star Field Hockey Club at 7:30 p.m. at West Ridge Middle School.
