Students Help Craft Soap to Support Haiti
St. Stephen's students and teachers have lovingly crafted handmade soap to support the school’s ongoing relationship with St. Etienne Episcopal School in Salmadere, Haiti. The 16-year partnership with our sister school enables more than 400 students in the Central Plateau of Haiti to receive a pre-kindergarten to ninth grade education.
The soap project is led by math instructor and alumnus Kurt Oehler '93, who crafts the soap in small batches with the help of Upper School students. Middle School students lend a hand with packaging and sales.
Soap for Salmadere will be available for purchase soon in the St. Stephen’s bookstore, as well as at Haiti-related campus events, including the December Haitian Marketplace and annual Haiti on the Hill fundraiser in May.

Located fewer than 10 miles from the Haitian border to the Dominican Republic, St. Etienne Episcopal School sits atop a scenic hill in the Haitian countryside. Located in a fairly remote area, the school was built in 2003 with funds raised by the St. Stephen’s community. The majority of children walk several miles to get to and from school every day.

Several times throughout the year, St. Stephen’s offers a week-long service trip to St. Etienne. The experience creates a lasting impression on the students who participate in the service program — many of whom develop longstanding relationships with the Haitian students they meet on the trip.
