Sports Week in Review, Oct. 7

With Homecoming festivities behind them, Spartan varsity teams continue training for peak performance for the upcoming SPC Tournament. In a little more than a month, varsity teams will travel to Houston to compete in the conference championships. At this point in the season, every conference match-up affects tournament seeding. The season may be winding down, but the competition is heating up!

 

Varsity Girls Volleyball battled Hyde Park in a competitive match that ultimately came down to the final few rallies. The squad sustained an awesome defensive effort against a strong Hyde Park team. Each time Hyde Park pushed, the Spartans responded. After five sets, the team was just a few points short of a win. Next up, the varsity girls will take on Antonian Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in Clayton Gym.

 

Varsity Field Hockey dominated Wednesday night’s non-conference match against St. Andrew’s at West Ridge Middle School, resulting in a convincing 6-0 victory. The defensive line confidently distributed the ball to start the Spartan attack and only conceded one penalty corner in the entire 60 minutes of play. Spartan midfielders and forwards were relentless in the attacking third. Five different Spartans tallied goals on Wednesday night, a team high for the season. After a well-deserved down week, the team will take on Houston Christian for Senior Night on Friday, Oct. 18, at 5 p.m. on Phipps Field.

 

The Saints football team traveled to Fort Worth to take on Fort Worth Country Day School in their third conference match of the season. After falling behind early in the game, the Saints battled back in the second half. Despite the team’s efforts, the boys suffered their first conference loss of the season, 47-28, to a talented FWCD team. This Friday, Oct. 11, the Saints will take on Episcopal School of Dallas at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Upper School campus.

 

Varsity Boys Volleyball fell in three straight sets on Saturday to Episcopal High School of Houston. The team struggled to rally after serving slips ups and inconsistent passing and hitting. The boys hope to regain footing this weekend as they travel to Houston for two conference match-ups against Kinkaid and Awty International.

 

Cross Country turned heads at the Marble Falls Invitational on Saturday morning. On the boys’ side, a young Spartan squad took first place in the Varsity Boys D2 race with an average time of 18:55.4. Finishing consecutively in places 2-5 were Jayan Nitzsche, Fernando Arroyo, Hansen Zhang and Marshall Cloyd. On the girls’ side, junior Katie Cline finished 10th overall in a stacked race. Even more exciting, the following six runners earned PRs in Saturday’s race: Fernando Arroyo, Hansen Zhang, Ryder Schmelzle, Jorge Carzo-Madero, Patrick Simmonds and Connor Guess.
