Spartan Spirit Soars for Homecoming Celebration

The St. Stephen’s school community celebrated homecoming Spartan-style on Friday, Sept. 27. They were joined in the festivities by alumni who returned to campus for a weekend of Reunion activities.

Homecoming kicked off at 11 a.m. with an energetic pep rally, led by members of student government (StuGov). Fans of all fall sports were called to the pep rally in Clayton by the school’s Thunder Drummers, who roused their spirit for the girls’ and boys’ varsity volleyball games and the varsity field hockey game, all against Kinkaid, later that afternoon. StuGov reps for the Class of 2021, Chelsea Saucedo and Betsy Goodrum, even designed a special purple tee for everyone to commemorate the event.

Following afternoon classes, the merriment continued with the Spartan Block Party, which is hosted annually by the Parents’ Association. Students of all ages played carnival games, enjoyed an array of sweet treats, gleefully threw pies at their favorite faculty and friends, and vaulted themselves through the air on bungee cords before gathering by class to decorate golf cart “floats” for the homecoming parade.

A number of Spartan alumni, on campus for Reunion weekend, joined student revelers and their families for the school-wide Campus Cookout in Clayton Gym at 5:30 p.m. Head of School Chris Gunnin, and his wife, Nancy, hosted the event, which offered classic cookout fare, including hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad and the dining hall’s world-famous chocolate chip cookies!

A highlight of the evening was the varsity homecoming football game, which pitted the joint St. Stephen’s-St. Andrew’s Saints against the Trinity Valley Trojans. Saints supporters, wearing their pep rally tees and carrying hand-painted banners, filled Denius field, hoping to drown the competition in a sea of purple and team spirit. Fans were treated to another amazing performance by the Thunder Drummers, who presented an inspiriting half-time show under the direction of instructor and composer Trevor Detling.

Many thanks to all the Spartan and Saints fans, who cheered on our players throughout their hard-fought competitions.
