Highlights of Homecoming Games

Homecoming on The Hill proved to be an exciting weekend for Spartan athletes and fans alike. Varsity girls volleyball, boys volleyball and field hockey squads took on Kinkaid and Awty of Houston this weekend in conference match-ups while the Saints football team battled Trinity Valley under the lights on Friday, and cross country competed Saturday in the McNeil Invitational.

Varsity Girls Volleyball dominated the match on Friday, earning a victory over Kinkaid in just three sets. The team was roused by all the positive energy on campus Friday afternoon and channeled it on the court, playing their best volleyball to date. On Saturday, the squad continued their conference win streak, earning a crucial 3-1 victory over Awty and moving to 2-2 in conference play. The hunt is on for an SPC tournament bid, and the next conference match takes place in Clayton on Friday, Oct. 18, against Houston Christian.

Varsity Field Hockey fell behind early in the game against Kinkaid. Despite earning more shots on goal and more attacking penalty corners than the Falcons, the team ultimately fell to the talented Houston squad by a score of 1-3. On Saturday, the Spartans bounced back against Awty International School, SPC’s newest hockey team, scoring five goals and dominating the game.

Varsity Boys Volleyball brought energy to Clayton Gym in Friday’s conference match against Kinkaid, and the rowdy crowd helped lift the team to defeat Kinkaid, 3-1. On Saturday, 11th grade brothers Bryan Lugo Carrasco and Jeanpaul Lugo Carrasco provided the serving and passing spark the team needed to take down Awty in three sets. With two conference wins over the weekend, the team is currently sitting comfortably in first place in SPC’s South Zone.

Austin Saints Football took down Trinity Valley of Fort Worth, 21-6, under the lights on Denius Field on Friday. The team’s balanced offense helped the Saints control the clock and kept momentum in their favor. Successful passing and running plays added to the excitement, and the Saints’ defensive strengths were evident, holding Trinity Valley to just one touchdown late in the game. The festive atmosphere and enthusiastic crowd were icing on the cake for the Saints second conference victory.

Varsity Cross Country competed in the McNeil Invitational Meet on Saturday morning as the team continues to prepare for upcoming South Zone competition on Oct. 26. Eleventh grader Katie Cline set a new school record, finishing in 19:12.2, and 12th grader Julian Baeza moved to third all-time at St. Stephen’s, finishing in 15:40.6. Other runners securing personal records during Saturday’s meet included Sloan Wittliff, Gabriel Estrada, Fernando Arroyo, Marshall Cloyd, Andy Li, Amaan Rumi and Connor Guess, as well as Kira Rosen and Sophie Johnson.
