Spartans Win 1st Place at UT Crowdsourcing Workshop

On Saturday, Sept. 14, St. Stephen’s 10th graders Sam Palmer and Anish Palakurthi competed in a crowdsourcing workshop for college and select high school students that was hosted by The University of Texas at Austin and one of its research institutes, CII.

The two Spartans were on the four-person team that placed first in identifying an innovative idea with the highest potential for a commercial venture to support future Mars colonization. Their winning idea is a system and process of exploring for water vapor and deposits on asteroids and capturing sub-surface water below the Martian polar caps.

The workshop was part of a larger research effort led by Fernanda Leite, Ph.D., an associate professor with the Cockrell School of Engineering. The research will utilize the collective talents of students at UT Austin, Carnegie Mellon University and Georgia Tech to provide data for a strategic initiative of CII.
