StuGov Board Sworn into Office

On Sept. 21, St. Stephen's new Student Government (StuGov) executive board was sworn into office by Greg Hicks '68, head of the Upper School, during a special Chapel program.

Kathy Coe, dean of students for grades 9 to 11, began the service by calling board members to the Chapel altar. She then addressed everyone in attendance. "My friends, these people stand before you today, about to begin the important task within our school of leading the Student Government," she said. "Through their election by you, we have judged that they are capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of their offices. I ask you publicly to recognize them and offer them your support."

Following Coe's remarks, Executive Board President Veer Chauhan, a member of the Class of 2019, gave a brief acceptance speech to the student body, emphasizing his commitment to fulfilling his duties and supporting all students.

Hicks then stood before the executive board and swore them into office. "You have generously answered the call to serve as student government executive board of this community," he said. "We have chosen you and assured you of our support and affection. I now ask you to state publicly your intention to accept the responsibilities of your office."

The full executive board — Veer Chauhan, president; Philip Chang, vice president; Aidan Ellis, secretary; Chloe Lawrence, day student representative; and Mary Orms, boarding student representative — answered in the affirmative and were officially sworn in. Hicks then called upon the full StuGov membership in attendance to stand and be recognized.

The program ended with all members of StuGov reciting the Student Government Pledge and the Rev. Todd FitzGerald, school chaplain, blessing the board members and class representatives.
