Cindy Morriss Says Goodbye to The Hill

“As far back as high school, I wanted to teach English,” said Cindy Morriss, a well-loved Middle School English teacher who will retire from The Hill in June. Morriss initially came to St. Stephen’s as a parent and immediately fell in love with the school community.

“Two of my children, Kat ’06 and Matthew ’09, were well into their St. Stephen’s careers when I joined the staff in 2006," she explained. "My children thrived in the Middle School, sampling many types of activities, being challenged academically, and feeling nurtured and loved by faculty and staff. They loved the school so much that I wanted to be a part of it too.”

Her first year at the school, Morriss worked as a half-time assistant in Becker Library. The next year, she had the opportunity to teach a sixth grade English class, in addition to her library duties. The following year, she became the full-time seventh grade English teacher. Her other duties have included serving as seventh grade team leader, working on the curriculum committee, and teaching Self Science.

“I have been energized by my students,” she explained. “Without a doubt, I have learned as much or more from them as they have from me. I also have had the pleasure of working with gifted, dedicated colleagues whom I respect and enjoy being around. After a detour through the practice of law and parenting, I feel lucky to have had the chance to return to my first love!

“I will miss this place, the many students I have taught and my esteemed colleagues — along with the beautiful campus and the view out my classroom window,” said Morriss, who plans to spend her retirement reading and traveling, as well as becoming involved in literacy programs.

The St. Stephen’s community is tremendously grateful to Morriss for the countless ways she has enhanced our school and supported her students. She will be greatly missed!
