Literary Festival

St. Stephen's Episcopal School is pleased to announce Literary Festival 2023. On the morning of Wednesday, January 25, 2023, we will host an all-school celebration of writing in the form of conversations with working writers across a variety of genres.

Special thanks to Chair Sandy Vargas, who has been invaluable in the planning process of this longstanding festival!

  • Harmony Becker

    *This is a virtual session

    Harmony Becker is an accomplished cartoonist and illustrator.  Her first graphic novel, Himawari House, won the Kirkus Prize in 2022.  She collaborated with George Takei on the award-winning graphic novel They Called Us Enemy. Ms. Becker’s work has been praised for its “sheer variety of artistic styles…often within a single panel” (Kirkus).  Here’s your chance to find out more about blending art and writing!

    Sportswriter Chris Bils is Co-Founder of The Striker, a national soccer news app and website.  He has covered Austin FC and local soccer for The Striker and the Austin American-Statesman, and he has done freelance writing for The Dallas Morning News and other publications.  If you are interested in digital media journalism and sports, attend this session!

    UPPER SCHOOL: SESSION B ONLY

    Join St. Stephen’s students and Teen Press Corps members Rebecca Cole, Marygrace Beinke, Zoe Dorrance, Ava Sadasivan, and Roberto Vargas to learn more about the art of interviewing authors and publishing book reviews. Members of the Teen Press Corp are local Austin teens between the ages of 13-18.  They are from all parts of the community with diverse tastes from across the reading spectrum.  This is a panel format, so please bring your questions for the student members!

  • Matt Cook

    Matt Cook is a screenwriter, director, and producer of studio films and television series. He is known for his films Triple 9, The Duel, and Patriots Day.  Cook broke into the industry in 2009 and has since written for major studios such as Warner Bros, Fox, New Regency, DreamWorks, HBO, and Sony, among others.  To learn more about screenwriting and film, join this session!

  • Malcolm Friend

    Poet, performer, and SSES Faculty member Malcolm Friend is the author of mxd kd mixtape and the prize-winning poetry collection, Our Bruises Kept Singing Purple. He has received awards and fellowships from organizations including CantoMundo, Backbone Press, and the Center for African American Poetry & Poetics.  For insights into the creative process, join Mr. Friend’s session.

  • Russ Glenn

    UPPER SCHOOL: SESSION A ONLY

    Indie-Folk/Americana artist and SSES Faculty member Russ Glenn has released 4 albums since his debut album Starshell. His latest, released in 2022, is entitled Pale Blue Dot and was called a "must-listen album" by Neufutur.com. The song “Getaway” was chosen as a top single of 2022 by Electomagnetic Radio’s “Black Shirt Mix Tape” podcast. Learn more about the process of songwriting and hear a performance in Mr. Glenn’s session.

  • Faith Hillis

    Faith Hillis is a teaching artist, poet and performance maker from Houston, Texas. Faith  currently serves as a Lecturer for the University of Texas at Austin where she teaches Storytelling for Presentation for the new Master of Arts in Design program. Faith has worked with various communities and organizations including: Drama for Schools, Voices Against Violence, Creative Action, and The Performing Justice Project. To explore the power of poetry and performance, join Ms. Hillis.

  • Jeremi Suri

    Historian and scholar Jeremi Suri teaches at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and in the History Department at the University of Texas.  He is the author of numerous books about American History and blogs on contemporary politics and foreign policy.  He serves as a podcast host for the This is Democracy series.  Join Dr. Suri and bring your questions about American history and current events.

  • Leticia Urieta

    Writer and Community Teaching Artist Leticia Urieta will lead a writing workshop at the Literary Festival.  Ms. Urieta works with a focus on equity in creative writing and serves as Program Manager for Austin Bat Cave writing as well as director of the Barrio Writers workshop.  Here’s your chance to write in a workshop setting with the help of an engaging and experienced professional!

  • S. Kirk Walsh

    S. Kirk Walsh is a novelist, an editor, and a teacher.  Her debut novel, The Elephant of Belfast, is now in its fourth printing and has been published in many languages.  Ms. Walsh’s fiction, essays, and book reviews have been published in New York Times Book Review, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Los Angeles Review of Books, among others.  For insights into the process of researching and writing a popular novel and about writing as a critic, attend Ms. Walsh’s session.

  • Marit Weisenberg

    Young Adult novelist Marit Weisenberg is the author of This Golden State, which “reveals layers that include a twisting, high-wire crime thriller, a teen romance and, most significantly, a story about finding your place in your family.”  Other YA books by Ms. Weisenberg include Insomniac, and The Select series.  If you’re interested in Young Adult Fiction and the art of plot development, join this interesting session.

  • Jenny Tinghui Zhang

    Jenny Tinghui Zhang is a Chinese-American author of the acclaimed novel Four Treasures of the Sky. Her articles and essays have been published in sources such as Bustle, HuffPost, and The Cut, among many others.  She is currently a Kundiman Fiction Fellow and has won an award for teaching excellence.  To learn more about the work of this talented novelist and about writing in depth for publications, join Ms. Zhang.

    Evan Griffith is the author of the middle-grade novel Manatee Summer and other works.  He serves as an editor and teaches creative writing as a specialist with The Writing Barn in Austin.  This session will be a hands-on writing workshop, so prepare to think creatively, have fun, and learn more about writing!

  • Cathy O'Neill

    When middle-grade novelist Cathy O’Neill was young, she “opened every wardrobe expecting to find Narnia.” Years later, her own kids brought make-believe games and fairy tales back into her life and, with them, the inspiration for her Unraveled series of Young Adult novels, which includes The Princess Revolt and Tapestry of Tales.  This will be a fun session full of lively discussion about imaginative and magical writing!
