Teens and Screens - A conversation with Dr. Mike Brooks and Dr. Jon Lasser

During our Winter Wellness Seminar this past January, Dr. Brooks and Dr. Lasser come to speak with our 7th grade class about technology and teens. We have invited them back to speak with our parent community and guide a conversation around "Teens and Screens."

Our lives are increasingly enmeshed with technology and though there are certainly many benefits of technology, its seductive lure disconnects us from what is most important in life – each other and the world around us. To be both successful and happy in life, we must learn navigate these often treacherous waters and assist our children develop healthy relationships. In this presentation, we will discuss why technologies such as texting and social media have such a grip on us, what effects technology is having on our brains, how images in media are affecting behavior, and how to use our Tech Happy Life model to help you and your family use technology in a more balanced way.
 
Dr. Brooks is a Licensed Psychologist and a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology. He is the clinical director of the ApaCenter (Austin Psychology & Assessment Center) and the executive director of ABA Connect. He has vast clinical and educational experience. He is a frequent presenter and regular blogger on topics such as finding balance in a technological world, the effects of video game violence on children, cyberbullying, mindfulness, self-compassion and raising successful children. He has a new website, Tech Happy Life, in which he explores the challenge of finding life balance in a tech world. He is currently writing a book on this topic with his colleague, Dr. Jon Lasser, to be published by Oxford University Press. 
 
Dr. Jon Lasser is a professor and program director of the School Psychology specialist program at Texas State University.  He has authored three books (School Psychologist as Counselor, Grow Happy, and Professional Ethics in Midwifery Practice), as well as journal articles and chapters on a variety of subjects including autism, parenting, ethics, sexuality and graduate preparation. A frequent presenter at conferences and workshops, Jon has given invited talks to school districts and professional organizations for over ten years, presenting on a wide range of topics including ethics, assessment, counseling, and consultation.
