The Lantern Series Illuminates the Heart of St. Stephen’s

New immersive experience gives Spartan parents an interactive way to connect to campus.

The Lantern Series is described as “a special opportunity for parents to go behind the scenes and explore the people, programs and purpose that shape our school community.”

“We created this parent series that will give peeks into different parts of what makes St. Stephen’s so special,” says Elise Jones, Parents' Association president.

The intention of the new series is to create interactive experiences for parents that strengthen their connection to The Hill. During the first of four sessions in the series, which covered the history and legacy of the campus, parents listened to a short presentation about the Lasting Impact: The Campaign for St. Stephen’s, given by Head of School Chris Gunnin and Director of Advancement April Speck-Ewer. Parents then enjoyed a nature walk around campus, guided by Charlton Perry, director of outdoor education. Nearly 20 parents joined the sunset walk as Perry explained the origins and historical significance of several campus buildings.

“We didn't want parents, at the end of their day, to sit in Loop 360 traffic, come to campus, and sit for another hour and listen to people lecture to them,” Jones said. “This is all about: How can we go on a walk? How can we be involved? What can we do to create an experience the way that our children are experiencing every day?”

There are four gatherings in the series, covering topics ranging from the school’s history and legacy to science and innovation, the role of theology, and student wellness.

The next gathering, scheduled in November, will focus on innovation and inquiry in science education. Parents will conduct a hands-on science experiment, guided by instructors in the Upper School science and technology department.

“It's a great place for our Middle School parents to experience Upper School, and our Upper School parents to get to interact with these teachers,” said Jones. “It's just great community building.”

Parents are invited to shine the lantern together and be part of these meaningful conversations. You will get a chance to learn, ask questions and connect more deeply with our mission and the people who bring it to life every day.

Topics this year will include:

  • September 30: The History and Legacy of Our Campus
  • November 13: Innovation and Inquiry in Science Education
  • February 23: Chapel Life and the Role of Theology
  • April 22: Student Wellness
