Athletes from lacrosse to tennis, baseball, mountain biking and more compete for conference titles and postseason opportunities.
Spartan spring sports are heading into the final stretch of the season. Spartans are finishing strong with several programs preparing for SPC championships and state competitions in the coming weeks.
Boys Varsity Lacrosse
Spartan Boys Lacrosse earned the No. 1 seed entering the Southwest Preparatory Conference 3A Tournament, finishing conference play with a perfect 5-0 record. In the semifinals, St. Stephen’s easily defeated Trinity Valley 12-3. Championship Saturday proved challenging as the Spartans faced crosstown rival St. Andrew’s for the second time in two weeks. On April 8, in their SPC season finale, the Spartans edged the Highlanders 5-4 at St. Andrew’s. In the championship matchup, St. Stephen’s scored the first three goals, but momentum shifted. The Spartans couldn’t make a comeback before time expired, ultimately dropping the championship game 6-9. The Spartans now turn their attention to the Texas High School Lacrosse League state finals, and all eyes are on a Class C trophy.
“This is an amazing group of young men and we are excited to train this week to finish our THSLL league play on a strong note,” said Boys Lacrosse Program Head Noah Fink. “We’ll continue to work toward being the best team we can be and secure a spot in the state playoffs. There’s a lot left to play for this spring.”
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
Girls Varsity Lacrosse finished conference play with a 2-2 record, earning the North Zone No. 3 seed and a first-round bye in the SPC Championships. On Friday, the Spartans faced St. John’s, the No. 2 -seed from the South Zone and a lacrosse powerhouse. After trailing in the first half, the Spartans surged back in the second, winning more draw controls in the third and fourth quarters, and battling to bring the score within one goal. The Mavericks ran out the clock, and the Spartans fell 12-14. In the fifth-place game, the Spartans, led by a strong senior class, defeated Awty International School 17-6. Next, the team travels to super regionals on May 2-3 for Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League competition, aiming to earn a trip to the state championship May 9-10.
“The first game of SPC was a moral victory for our squad,” said Lacrosse Program Head Emily Walling. “The girls battled the entire game against a talented St. John’s team, and I’m proud of their fight. The positive energy from this tournament will lead us toward TGHSLL state playoffs.”
Mountain Biking
Spartan mountain bikers wrapped up their season at the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) State Championship race. Jackson James ’27 delivered an impressive performance, finishing fifth overall. After starting the season in the JV4 Division and moving up to JV3, James was unable to transfer his points between divisions, which affected his starting position. He began the race in 41st place and passed 35 riders on a singletrack course to secure a sixth-place finish! Even more impressive, James competed in Varsity Lacrosse games on Friday and Saturday before racing Sunday.
Track and Field
Spartan Track and Field athletes recently competed in the Nick Finnegan Invitational in Houston last weekend, celebrating numerous personal bests over the two-day meet. Spartans will return to Houston for the SPC 4A Championships on May 1-2.
