Spring athletes have taken their final lap with an impressive and memorable season.
Varsity Tennis
Girls Varsity Tennis defeated Greenhill (Dallas), 3-2, in a close match in the first round of the recent Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships, sending the team to the semifinals to play top-seeded Kinkaid (Houston). The Spartans dropped their semifinal match and faced Hockaday (Dallas) in the third-place game. The team fell to the Daisies, 2-3, in a close match, finishing fourth in the 4A division.
Boys Varsity Tennis easily defeated Houston Christian, 5-0, in the first round of the SPC Championships. In the semifinals, the second-seeded Spartans faced third-seeded Kinkaid Falcons and managed to win, 3-2, after a lightning delay, sending the team to the championship match at Rice University against top-seeded St. John’s (Houston). In the finals, St. Stephen’s battled but ultimately fell, 2-3, to the Mavericks.
“It’s never fun to lose a final,” said Head Coach Jason Haugen, “But this group was really fun to coach. I’m glad we got to do this together.”
Varsity Track & Field
Runners on the Spartan track teams celebrated at the conclusion of the SPC 4A Championship Meet in Houston. Notable performances across the boys and girls teams included places on the podium, personal bests and season bests.
Oscar Whiteley Bermeo ’27 ran a personal best and finished second in the 3200-meter race (9:58.64). Felicite Jubelin ’26 ran a season best in the 3200-meter race, and Audrey Wan ’25 finished fifth in the same race. Sophia Holland ’28 finished the meet with two personal bests, one in the 1600-meter race and one in the 800-meter race. Lucia Shahan ’27 also finished with a personal best in the 1600-meter race, while Hana Milosavljevic ’28 earned a personal best in the 800-meter race.
The strong team of Spartan sprinters also left it all on the track in their final meet, with six runners crossing the finish line in record time. Adeline Glenn ’27 (100-meter hurdles), Truman Bares ’26, (100-meter race), John Kyles ’27 (100-meter race) all set personal bests along with Gabi Curtis ’26 (200-meter race), Audrey Brunson ’28 (200-meter race) and Felix Eugene ’25 (200 meter-race).
The Spartan relay teams were also on fire l, with the boys landing on the podium. The Boys 4x800-meter relay, comprised of Ben Oehler ’26, Oscar Whiteley Bermeo ’27, Santiago Echeverry ’26 and Graham Boles ’25 finished third (8:18.62). In addition, three other relay teams scored for the team: Girls 4x400-meter relay (Sydney Durrett ’28, Audrey Brunson ’26, Gabi Curtis ’26, Tristan Lovell ’25), Girls 4x400-meter relay (Coco Kim ’28, Sydney Durrett ’28, Kennedy Lartigue ’27, and Tristan Lovell ’25), and Boys 4x400-meter relay (John Kyles ’27, Truman Bares ’26, Felix Eugene ’25 and Ben Patrick ’25).
Coco Kim ’28 stepped up in the 4x400-meter race, running her leg in 63 seconds, having never run a 400-meter race before! Impressively, Gabi Curtis ’26, Truman Bares ’26 and Feliz Eugene ’25 were double-scorers in individual events.
“We are incredibly proud of how our athletes represented our school,” said Head Coach Sandra Patrick. “They competed with heart, resilience and unity!”
Varsity Baseball
Spartan Baseball fell to second-seed St. John’s (Houston) in the first round of the SPC 4A Championships. The Spartans put two runs on the board against a top team and only gave up three earned runs, but ultimately lost the game, 2-7. In their second game against St. Mark’s School of Texas (Dallas), Ryan Kim ‘25 knocked in two runs in the second inning to put the Spartans ahead. The Lion’s high-powered offense managed to put more runs on the board, and the Spartans dropped their final game, 3-9. Zach Prager ‘25 carried the team on the mound facing top competition all season, recording one no-hitter, 91 strikeouts, and posted at 2.52 ERA.
“I was really proud of how the boys competed at SPC,” said Head Coach Steven Elder. “We played consistent, competitive baseball against some of the best teams in the conference all season. We have a lot of positive things to look forward to in the years ahead.”
Varsity Golf
The Girls Varsity Golf team recently returned from the SPC Championship Tournament, competing at the Golf Club of Houston. Claire Wan ’25 earned her third-straight tournament championship after two days of golfing in less-than-ideal weather. Wan’s consistency has earned her Athlete of the Week honors twice this season along with praise from her teammates and coach.
“She won three straight SPC titles because she plays the game with intelligence,” said Head Coach Garrett Brustein. “She avoids scoring swings that everyone else has.”
The Boys Varsity Golf team returned from Houston last week with one All-SPC golfer — Keyen Gupta ’26! While the team came in sixth in the 4A division, the squad had its best single-round team score of the year on day two of the tournament.
Varsity Lacrosse
The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team ended their Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League playoff run last weekend after a tough loss to Highland Park High School (Dallas) at super-regionals in Friendswood, Texas. The squad went 7-6 on the season, 2-2 in SPC conference matches, and finished second in district play for Division II of the Texas Girls High School Lacrosse League.
The Boys Varsity Lacrosse ended their season after a Senior Night victory over Liberty Hill High School. The squad will host their first annual Lacrosse Alumni Game on Saturday, May 17 at 11 a.m. at Denius Stadium. The Spartans finished with a perfect 5-0 record in SPC games, a 4-1 record in Texas High School Lacrosse League play, and 10-2 overall.

The Spartys: Varsity Athletic Banquet to Take Place on May 18
The Spartys, the annual St. Stephen’s Varsity Athletic Banquet, will take place on May 18 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. in Clayton Gym. This student-only event is organized by the Athletic Council, a group of student-athlete leaders on campus, and all awards are student-nominated. Varsity athletes were sent an email invitation along with an award nomination form. Parents, please remind your student to RSVP for the event. Team Champions and All-SPC honors will be celebrated and awards will be presented to the Breakout Athletes of the Year, Most Outstanding Newcomers, Coach of the Year, Athletes of the Year, and more!
