Spartan athletes are stepping up their game, and are determined to return from Houston with hardware.
The fall Varsity athletic season is winding down with only a few weeks remaining. Spartans are gearing up for their final conference competitions and the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships!
Cross Country
Spartan Cross Country is prepared to finish strong at their final meet of the season this Saturday, heading into the Southwest Preparatory Conference Championships on November 8 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball, Texas. While the boys team has celebrated many individual medalists this fall, the girls team finished first at the Dominic Savio Invitational and second at the St. Andrew’s Invitational. Traveling to Mesa, Arizona, to compete in the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival in September was a highlight for athletes this season.
“Our team works hard whether we are training early in the morning or in the heat of the afternoons,” commented Cross Country Head Coach Greg Cook. “I am proud of the way our group supports each other every day in practice and at meets. It's a tough sport, but the team embraces the challenge. We’re going into the SPC Championships ready to compete for a trophy!”
Field Hockey
Varsity Field Hockey moved to 6-1 in Southwest Preparatory Conference North Zone standings this past week after a 2-0 victory over St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. The squad has managed a heavy travel schedule this fall with trips to Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and St. Louis. Next up, Spartans hit the road for their final weekend of conference competition against Casady (Oklahoma City) and Holland Hall (Tulsa) before the SPC Tournament in Houston on November 6-8.
“This team is special,” said Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. “Our large senior class has really taken ownership of our team culture, and it’s been so rewarding to step back and watch them take the reins of the program. With only a couple of games left, I think we’re peaking at just the right time for a solid finish to the hockey season!”
Football
Spartan Varsity Football has rejuvenated The Hill, and the 6-1 record entering the final week of the season certainly brought lively crowds to cheer on the team at Denius Stadium! Fourteen seniors contributed to the transition from six-man football in 2024 to 11-man this fall. In their final game of the season, the team will face the CenTex Sports Association Outlaws on Thursday, October 23, at 7 p.m. at Denius Stadium.
“We’re looking forward to finishing the season on a high note,” said Football Head Coach Jay Patterson. “We’ve proved a lot to ourselves and our community this season, and we’re looking forward to competing in the Southwest Preparatory Conference beginning in the 2026-27 academic year.”
Girls Volleyball
Girls Varsity Volleyball celebrated their senior class this week with a 3-0 victory over the Austin Royals. As the team adapts to a new coach’s systems, it’s clear the Spartans are committed to challenging themselves in training and in competitions. The squad is preparing for the SPC Tournament in Houston on November 6-8.
“The physical and technical growth in each player is evident,” wrote Girls Volleyball Program Head Paula Trejos. “Every player on the court is determined to work their best for the greater good of their team, and I’m proud of their development this season.”
Boys Volleyball
After graduating a strong senior class last year and a slower start to the season, the Boys Volleyball team has been making significant strides of late in conference play. In the last week, Spartans defeated top-of-conference foe Greenhill and took two sets off of St. Mark’s School of Texas — the team regularly considered the best in the SPC. With another potential upset scheduled for this Saturday against Episcopal High School in Houston, the boys have their eyes set on what should be an exciting and promising conference tournament during the first week of November.
“This team has proven they are ready to take on tough opponents,” said Boys Volleyball Program Head Alex Hurlburt. “They can compete with the best teams in the conference, and our upward trajectory has made for a fun season. Keep an eye on this program — good things are happening for Spartan Volleyball!”
Water Polo
The Spartan Water Polo team wrapped up its season at the Private School State Championship Tournament in Dallas on October 11. After defeating John Paull II High School, Spartans dropped a close match to St. Mark's School of Texas, one of the best water polo teams in the state. The squad bounced back with a win over Dallas Consolidated, 16-13, to finish third in the inaugural season of Spartan Water Polo. With a new facility on campus, keep an eye on this program’s growth in the years to come. Read more about the new water polo program.
Cheerleading
The Spartan Cheerleading squad has energized the spirit of Friday Night Lights on The Hill this season. The team has been growing in numbers every season, and the energy they bring to the sidelines is contagious. Last week, Spartan Cheerleaders traveled with Varsity Football to Houston and cheered the Spartans on to a 53-20 victory over St. Francis.
“We’re proud of how our Spartan Cheerleaders have added to the spirit of home football games this season,” said Athletic Director Jon McCain. “This group is eager to support their peers and get the community excited about our Spartan teams.”
