Student Try Their Hand at Three Dimensional Modeling

Lisa Orr's Upper School ceramic students recently tried their hand at three-dimensional modeling of "Green Man," an image that can be found throughout history and across cultures.

"The project enables students to learn to model an image in three dimensions rather than drawing features into a flat surface," Orr explained. "It also gives them a chance to practice additive and subtractive techniques in sculpting."

Orr said the Green Man image she had students model is based loosely on sculptures found on Medieval European churches, which often include many depictions of faces with foliage. "Theologists think it represents man’s connection to nature," she explalined. "It is a mystery what these images mean over time in various cultures. For me, it represents man as a part of nature’s web."
