St. Stephen's Episcopal School, a day and boarding school of 697 students (grades 6-12), is seeking a Middle School Dean of Students for a full-time position beginning August 2019. The applicant should be a seasoned school teacher and/or administrator with direct experience working with middle school students and faculty.
The Middle School Dean of Students is responsible for overseeing the academic life, support and well-being of St. Stephen’s Middle School students. This role encompasses aspects of discipline, attendance, scheduling and attending to the well-being of individual students and the Middle School as a whole. While scheduling is a necessary component of the Dean’s job, it is not likely that full responsibility for this task will be the Dean’s. Communication is a key component of this position and includes effectively conveying information to administrators, faculty, parents and students. The Dean of Students reports to and works in coordination with the Head of Middle School to determine and implement consequences for major school violations and minor disciplinary infractions. Communicating about the disciplinary process and outcomes with parents, students, teachers, counselors and advisors is the responsibility of the Dean.
In student life and student support, the Dean oversees the fourth period Middle School lunch, providing a forum for announcements and overseeing lunch seating and attendance. The Dean works with the Middle School counselor and Health Center staff on mental health and wellness issues. The Dean oversees the production and distribution of the Middle School handbook and is responsible for updating the version posted on the school’s website. The Dean also assists with the review of report cards, comment reports, Honor Roll lists and the end-of-term examination process. In addition, the Dean helps to coordinate Middle School extracurricular activities, which contribute to student life beyond the classroom.
Qualified candidates will have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field and prior experience in middle school education. The applicant will possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty and administrators. This position also may include teaching, coaching, and/or residential duties and involvement with school life that will be determined based on the needs of the school, as well as the skills, experience and interests of the individual who fills this position.
St. Stephen’s has a longstanding commitment to being an inclusive community. For the 2018–19 school year, students of color represent 34 percent of the Upper School student population (52 percent when including international students), and 40 percent of the Middle School population.
Equal access to employment, programs and services is available to all. With respect to its employment practices, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation or identity.
Qualified candidates should submit their resume, a letter of interest addressing their qualifications for this role, a completed official application and a resume to Magnus Maccow, Head of Middle School, at firstname.lastname@example.org
