Spartan Athletes of the Week: Harper Nelson and Benson Sparrow
Congratulations to Harper Nelson ’26 and Benson Sparrow ’26 for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors!
Harper Nelson has been a standout midfielder for the Spartan Girls Varsity Soccer team. Nelson helped her team earn their first victory of the season on the road over Cornerstone Christian in San Antonio last week. Her composure on the ball and ability to successfully distribute under pressure often lead to goalscoring opportunities. There’s no doubt that Nelson leads by example and elevates the overall play.
“Harper is one of our team’s unsung heroes,” said Varsity Girls Head Coach Andy Aceves. “Her contributions don’t always show up on the state sheet, but she is critical to the way we want to play, both in and out of possession.”
Girls Varsity Soccer will continue its season after the Thanksgiving holiday. The Spartans will take on Antonian on Tuesday, December 9, at 7 p.m. at home.
Benson Sparrow has had a phenomenal start to the basketball season, helping the Spartans go 5-0 for the first time in nearly a decade. Sparrow, who plays combo guard, has averaged 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals per game so far. Last weekend, Sparrow and his teammates won the San Marcos Academy Kick-Off Classic, and Sparrow walked away with Tournament MVP.
“His tenacity and leadership set the tone for us,” said Boys Varsity Head Coach Christian Spencer. “I’m extremely proud of the competitive energy he brought to every single game.”
You can catch Sparrow and his teammates on Friday, November 21, at 5:30 p.m. as they take on Lago Vista High School in Clayton Gym.
