Spartan Athletes of the Week: Emerson Yorio and Oscar Whiteley Bermeo

Spartan Athletes of the Week: Emerson Yorio and Oscar Whiteley Bermeo

Congratulations to Emerson Yorio ‘28 and Oscar Whiteley Bermeo ‘27 for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors!

Emerson Yorio ‘28 traveled to Houston last weekend with Varsity Field Hockey to compete in the Awty Play Day and earned wins over St. Agnes (4-0), Awty International School (3-1), and Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart (2-1). Yorio played a major role in all three games, recording a goal in each match. Her tenacity in the circle to get a shot or a deflection on cage helped the Spartans remain undefeated on the day.

“Emerson has a knack for being in the right place at the right time,” remarked Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. “She works really hard off the ball to finish plays, and this weekend was a great example. She had one of the prettiest goals we’ve seen all season on Saturday!”

You can catch Emerson and the Varsity Field Hockey team on Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. on Phipps Field as the squad hosts the Episcopal School of Dallas in their first conference match of the season!

Oscar Whiteley Bermeo ‘27 continued a strong start to his junior season with a 2nd-place overall finish at the St. Andrew's Invitational last Saturday. His time of 16:47 is a significant improvement over his performance at the same meet last year.

“Oscar has set a great example for the rest of the team with his hard work and consistency,” commented Head Cross Country Coach Greg Cook. “I look forward to more great performances through the second half of the season and into the SPC Championships.”

You can catch Whiteley Bermeo and the Varsity Cross Country team at the Desert Twilight Cross Country Festival in Mesa, Arizona, on Friday, September 26.
