Spartan Athletes of the Week: Drew Bonner and Coco Kim

Congratulations to Drew Bonner and Coco Kim for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week Honors!

Drew Bonner ’27 helped lead his team on and off the court at last weekend's Aggieland Tournament in Bryan, Texas. Bonner ran a 5-1 for multiple matches on Saturday, and then transitioned into a dominating hitter on Sunday. Bonner’s quality touches and game awareness helped the Spartans go 3-2 on the weekend and earn a 5th-place finish at the tournament. 

“Drew was an incredible teammate for us last weekend,” said Boys Volleyball Program Head Alex Hurlburt. “He stepped into whatever role the team needed. His blocking, serving and attacking have all improved substantially this season, but what stands out most is his willingness and ability to step in and set when needed. That versatility has been incredibly impressive.”

Bonner and his Spartan teammates will take on conference opponents this weekend in Clayton Gym. On Friday, the squad faces Awty International School (Houston, Texas) at 7 p.m. in Clayton Gym, and will then battle Kinkaid School (Houston, Texas) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Coco Kim ’28 has been a dominant force in the midfield for Spartan Field Hockey this fall, and she played a large part in last week’s 9-0 rout of Southwest Preparatory Conference opponent Oakridge School (Arlington, Texas). Kim recorded two goals and one assist on the afternoon, and served as the team’s primary inserter on attacking penalty corners and first runner on defensive penalty corners. 

“Coco’s presence on the pitch is apparent from the first whistle,” said Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. “Her athleticism, decision-making and competitiveness are game-changers for us, but what I love the most is her team-first approach to hockey. She wants the team to win, and she’ll fill whatever role needs to be filled to put us in the best possible position to get the victory.”

Kim and the Spartan Field Hockey program will take on their parents next Thursday in what’s bound to be an entertaining match! Come cheer them on at 6 p.m. on Phipps Field!
