Spartan Athletes of the Week: Coco Kim and Ben Staubley
Congratulations to Coco Kim ‘28 and Ben Staubley ‘29 for earning Spartan Athlete of the Week honors!
Coco Kim dominated the pitch at left back in the team’s most recent conference wins over Fort Worth Country Day School and Oakridge last weekend. While the stat sheet doesn’t always reflect a defender’s contributions, her presence was certainly felt by opponents. Kim’s quickness played a part in dispossessing crafty attackers, and she often initiated the Spartans’ outlet with strong, accurate passes.
“Coco’s ability to anticipate a play and step up to intercept has really impacted our team positively in recent games,” commented Field Hockey Program Head Chelsea Richards. “She is an aggressive, proactive defender, and it’s been fun to see her surprise opponents with her speed and distribution skills.”
Kim and her teammates will battle the Southwest Preparatory Conference’s two best teams at home this weekend. Come cheer on the Spartans as they take on St. John’s at 5 p.m. on Friday and Kinkaid at 11 a.m. on Saturday!
Ben Staubley and the Spartan Water Polo team traveled to Dallas last weekend to compete in the TISCA Private School State Championships and returned to Austin with a third-place finish. Playing primary center and center defender, Staubley led the team in goals out of center, steals, and drawn ejections while almost never subbing out over the three-game campaign.
“Ben was a vocal leader in team huddles,” commented Water Polo Head Coach Tom Andrew. “He maintained a positive and encouraging attitude with his teammates, many of whom were competing in their first-ever water polo competitions!”
Congrats to Staubley and the Spartan Water Polo team on their third-place finish this season!
