Bringing Art to Life on The Hill

The Nancy Wilson Scanlan Art Gallery, located in the Helm Fine Arts Center, is an educational professional exhibition space for the St. Stephen's Episcopal School community. The work of Middle and Upper School students is regularly on display, and visiting artists are invited to interact with our students through gallery talks, workshop, in-class demonstrations and special projects.

The Nancy Wilson Scanlan Art Gallery opened in the fall of 1994. Alum Nancy Wilson Scanlan ’59, for whom the gallery is named, is an accomplished professional photographer. Over the years, she has had several exhibitions of her own work in the eponymous exhibit space.

Scanlan's connections to the school are strong and deep. In addition to teaching art history at the school, her two children graduated from St. Stephen’s, and she boasts two Spartan grandchildren — both creative visual artists! Scanlan also served the school faithfully as a trustee and a member of other important school committees devoted to sustaining the founding mission and vision of the school.

The Scanlan Gallery serves as host to the annual Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Competition and Exhibition. Each year, about 2,000 student works of art are submitted to be adjudicated by professional artists. The winning work of Gold Key Award recipients is exhibited in the gallery before being sent on for national adjudication.

We dedicate the last six weeks of every school year to showcasing St. Stephen's students' works through a series of Middle School and Upper School exhibitions.
