Our Partnership with St. Etienne, Salmadère, Haïti
In 2003, a small group of St. Stephen’s students and faculty members ventured to a rocky hillside village called Salmadère in a remote area of the Central Plateau of Haiti, near the border with the Dominican Republic. Then-Head of School Rev. Roger Bowen was invited to consider a partnership between St. Stephen’s and the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti with a new church and school called St. Etienne: St. Stephen’s in Kreyòl. Over time, the school became the anchor of the Salmadère community. Twenty years later, the school–along with other nonprofits and organizations now enriching and strengthening the community–is the ongoing fulfillment of a dream.
