Scholastic Regional Art Award Winners

Fifteen students from St. Stephen’s Episcopal School have earned a total of 23 awards in this year’s Scholastic Regional Art Awards.

The four Middle School and 12 Upper School students received seven Gold Key awards, seven Silver Key awards and nine Honorable Mentions for artwork entered in a range of categories, including Film and Animation, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Architecture, Sculpture, Mixed Media, Photography, and Ceramics and Glass.

This year’s Scholastic Regional Art Awards competition drew more entries than ever before. The judges evaluated 1,092 submissions in 14 different categories, plus 56 senior art and photography portfolios. There were 144 Middle School entries and 948 High School entries, plus the 56 portfolios. This was the largest number of entries that the competition has had in its 18 years as a regional affiliate.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. The awards are presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and to present their work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarship.

Teens in grades 7 through 12, from public, private, or home schools, can apply in 28 categories of art and writing. Students’ submissions are blindly judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts who look for works that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision.

Artwork from this year’s regional Gold and Silver Key winners will be exhibited in the Scanlan Art Gallery on the St. Stephen’s campus from Sunday, January 25 to Friday, February 6.
