Sports Medicine & Athletic Training The Role of a Certified Athletic Trainer Certified athletic trainers are responsible for the prevention, assessment, care, referral, and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries and illnesses.
Athletic trainers are allied health care professionals responsible for advising parents and student-athletes about the care of acute and chronic injuries and about related issues like hydration and nutrition. Athletic trainers practice under the delegating authority of the team physician. If an athlete sees a physician for an athletic related injury or illness, please communicate with the athletic trainers via email or phone. A physician's note may be required for return to play.
Once an athletic injury occurs athletic trainers assess the severity of the injury, provide immediate care, contact parents, coordinate physician referrals, and provide rehabilitation in conjunction with the established medical providers including physicians and physical therapists. The goal of the athletic trainer is to coordinate the student-athletes return to play by facilitating communication between physicians, parents, coaches, school nurses, and athletes. Athletic trainers help ensure that your athlete is safe during practice and competition. Please feel free to call or e-mail us with any questions regarding your student-athlete.
